Pictures - Sawston Youth Group Canoe Club

• You call that white water?

On Sunday 18th May, SYG Canoe Club organised a trip to the nationally famous Nene Whitewater Centre at Northampton. The trip was open to all two star kayakers in the group but, when it came to it, only four staff plus Robert dared to face the challenge!

The Nene Whitewater Centre offers a sluice-controlled artificial course of approximately 300m in length in the vague shape of a spiral, dropping about twenty feet over the length of the course. There are three sluices which are used to provide the water, which is pumped up from the nearby River Nene. Two of the three pumps were working when we went making for a scary but hugely enjoyable afternoon's paddling!

Because of the nature of the water (white and lots of it!) all two-star paddlers need to be coached by a BCU Level Three coach or above. Since SYG do not yet have a Level Three coach of our own, we 'borrowed' Dave Savage from Mepal Outdoor Centre who very kindly agreed to give up his afternoon to ensure we had a safe and enjoyable time.
